Words Create Worlds
Day 8—Read Luke 6
For the past couple years, I’ve been writing a book. During this time, I have become very aware of words and how we use them. Every day is filled with words and decisions about which word will best convey what God has laid on my heart. I long to use my words well. I want my words to bless others and call them into an intimate love relationship with
Father, Son, and Spirit.
As a newly married woman, I was privileged to have author, Gladys (Rusty) Hunt as my mentor and friend. To say she loved words and books would be an understatement. In the 70’s, she wrote a lovely book, Honey for a Child’s Heart, to point parents toward good books for their children. She later wrote Honey for a Woman’s Heart. In speaking about words, she made this powerful statement:
“Words create worlds for us to live in.”
As I ponder the words that pour from Facebook and other social media sites, I have to wonder about what kind of world we are creating for our family and friends. Often our words are critical, divisive, harsh, and flat out wicked. They are not the kind of words Jesus has called us to speak.
My heart was pierced as I read the words of Luke 6:28-37….
28 Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
35 Love your enemies, do good to them…
36 Be merciful…
37 Don’t be judgmental or condemning….forgive!
The truth is, “there is life and death in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21) We as Christ-followers have an amazing opportunity to use social media to speak life into others! The words we post can create a world where others see Abba Father’s compassionate love.
Holding in your heart and mind the words of Luke 6 and Proverbs 18, what changes might you want to make in your posts on social media? When someone on Social Media that attacks you how might you “Do to others as you would have them do to you?” (Luke 6:31)
