Day 36—Read Luke 22

Jesus is about to gather with His dearest earthly friends for the last earthly Passover meal they will celebrate together. As Jesus looks forward to this Passover meal, He uses particular words that set it apart from all other Passovers. He is “anxiously anticipating” the event. He is “looking forward” to it with “deep longing.” Read between the lines. This is not going to be a regular, run-of-the-mill routine Passover Meal. He wants to leave them with a specific impression before His suffering begins. In the hundreds of times I’ve read this passage, I never saw it before. What does He deeply long to share with them?

One small word bursts through the lines of Luke 22:15 ….WITH.  It flows through every word and action of the Lords’ supper with His closest friends. It’s imbedded within the instructions He gives them during the Lord’s Supper. He doesn’t want them to forget He is with them for even a moment. In something as common as eating and drinking, Jesus buries deep within their hearts a way to remember He’s always with them. In the same way, He is with us in everything too, even things as common as eating and drinking. In our daily, regular, run-of-the-mill routines, God is with us.

It’s not a new message.  From Genesis to Revelation, God has been shouting it out:

Genesis 28
Behold, I am your God.  I will be with you wherever you go…I will not leave you
Isaiah 43:1-5k
When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you….
For I am the Lord your God… You are precious to Me and honored and I love you.  Don’t be afraid. I am with you!
Revelation 21:3
“Look, God’s home is now among His people! He will live with them and they will be His people. God Himself will be with them as their God.
Even His name declares it! Out of all the names God could choose for Himself on earth, He chose to be called WITH!  Emmanuel, God with us!

Choose a difficulty you are currently facing.  Picture Jesus next to you, WITH you, in your difficulty. Ask Him what He would like you to know as you face it together.
