Back in 2011 Father Kevin Miller wrote an article in Christianity Today titled From Relevant Dude to Spiritual Father. In it he talks about what different generations within his church want from him. He asserts that many older folks in his congregation want him to be relevant, competent, and efficient. But the new generation of burgeoning adults he pastors are looking for a different kind of minister. According to Father Miller, the younger adults don’t want a “Relevant Dude” but a “Spiritual Father.” “For some,” he says, “I’m the Christian dad they never had. For others, I’m the father figure who’s here now.”
Maybe the world needs fewer cool pastors…fewer “guardians” and more spiritual fathers and mothers.
1 Corinthians 4:14-17
I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.
